About this parasha
Moses’s father-in-law Jethro advises him to appoint judges to help him, and at Mount Sinai, with thunder, lightning and the sound of the shofar, God gives the Ten Commandments.
The picture: The Ten Commandments
The two tablets of the Ten Commandments, shining on Mount Sinai (Exodus 20:1–14).
Why this picture?
Yitro is the parasha of Mount Sinai, and the Ten Commandments are its heart, so much so that many congregations stand while they are read; the rays and the mountaintop mark the moment they were given and set it apart from the Shavuot holiday icon, which shows two plain tablets.
