The picture: The Nile turned to blood
The first plague: the water of the Nile turns to blood (Exodus 7:14–25).
Why this picture?
Va’eira brings the first seven plagues, and the first one strikes the Nile, the river all of Egypt depended on, opening the contest between God and Pharaoh that fills the parasha.
