About this parasha
A new Pharaoh makes the Israelites slaves, baby Moses is saved from the Nile in a basket, and God speaks to Moses from a burning bush and sends him to tell Pharaoh, “Let My people go.”
The picture: The basket in the reeds
Baby Moses’ basket hidden among the reeds of the Nile, where Pharaoh’s daughter finds him (Exodus 2:3–6).
Why this picture?
Shemot begins the story of the Exodus, and Moses’ basket on the Nile is where it turns: a baby saved from Pharaoh’s decree grows up to lead his people out of Egypt, and the basket is the picture children remember.
