About this parasha
Moses sends twelve spies into Canaan, they return with a giant cluster of grapes, ten of them frighten the people, and the Israelites must wander forty years; the parasha ends with the mitzvah of tzitzit.
The picture: Milk and honey
“A land flowing with milk and honey,” as the spies describe Canaan (Numbers 13:27).
Why this picture?
Even the frightened spies agree that Canaan is “a land flowing with milk and honey,” and milk with a honeycomb shows that good land, which is why their fear was mistaken; the honeycomb keeps it apart from the Rosh Hashanah apple and honey.
