About this parasha
Korach leads a rebellion against Moses and Aaron, the earth opens and swallows the rebels, and Aaron’s staff blossoms overnight with flowers and almonds to show that God chose him.
The picture: The ground opens
The ground opens up beneath the rebels (Numbers 16:31–33).
Why this picture?
The ground opening beneath Korach’s followers is the turning point of the parasha, showing that God chose Moses and Aaron, and a calm crack in the earth tells it without frightening children.
