About this parasha
The Torah teaches the law of the red heifer, Miriam dies and the water runs out, Moses strikes the rock instead of speaking to it, Aaron dies, and a copper snake on a pole heals people bitten by snakes.
The picture: Water from the rock
Moses strikes the rock and water pours out for the people (Numbers 20:7–11).
Why this picture?
Water from the rock is the parasha’s best-known story and its hardest lesson: Moses was told to speak to the rock but struck it, and because of that he would not enter the Land of Israel.
