About this parasha

On the plains of Moab, Moses begins his farewell speeches, retelling the forty years in the wilderness, from appointing judges to the sin of the spies and the victory over the giant king Og, as the people prepare to enter the land.

The picture: At the edge of the land

The people camp by the Jordan, with the land they are about to enter on the other side (Deuteronomy 1:1–5).

Why this picture?

Devarim opens with the people camped by the Jordan, about to enter the land after forty years, and all of Moses’ speeches look across that river, so the river with the land beyond it sets the scene for the whole book.
