About this parasha

King Balak hires the prophet Balaam to curse the Israelites, Balaam’s donkey sees an angel and speaks, and every curse Balaam tries comes out as a blessing, including “How good are your tents, O Jacob.”

The picture: How good are your tents

“How good are your tents, O Jacob,” the words that open the Mah Tovu prayer (Numbers 24:5).

Why this picture?

Balaam comes to curse but blesses instead, and his words “How good are your tents, O Jacob” open the Mah Tovu prayer said on entering a synagogue, so the row of tents ties the parasha to daily prayer.
