About this parasha
The people must appoint fair judges and pursue justice, the rules for a king, a prophet and the cities of refuge are given, and even in war the fruit trees must not be cut down.
The picture: Justice, justice
A judge’s gavel: “Justice, justice you shall pursue.” (Deuteronomy 16:20).
Why this picture?
Shoftim begins with appointing judges and the call “Justice, justice you shall pursue,” and the gavel says “justice” at a glance while staying apart from the Yom Kippur scales.
