About this parasha
God tells Abram to leave his land and his father’s house and go to Canaan, promises him children as many as the stars, and makes a covenant with him, changing his name to Abraham.
The picture: Go!
Footsteps setting out, as God tells Abram: לֶךְ לְךָ, go from your land (Genesis 12:1).
Why this picture?
The parasha is named for God’s first words to Abram, “Lech lecha, go,” and the footprints show that journey away from home to a new land, the act of faith that begins the story of the Jewish people.
