About this parasha
God creates the world in six days and rests on the seventh, Adam and Eve eat the forbidden fruit and must leave the Garden of Eden, Cain kills his brother Abel, and by the tenth generation only Noah finds favor in God’s eyes.
The picture: The heavens and the earth
The newly made world, with the sun, moon and stars set in the sky (Genesis 1:1–19).
Why this picture?
Bereshit opens with the creation of the world, and its first verse, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth,” is exactly what the globe, sun, moon and stars show; one picture covers the whole first week of creation.
