About this parasha

In the wilderness of Sinai Moses counts the Israelites, each tribe camps around the Mishkan under its own banner, and the Levites are given the work of carrying the Mishkan.

The picture: In the wilderness

Bamidbar means “in the wilderness”: the people camp in the desert of Sinai (Numbers 1:1).

Why this picture?

Bamidbar means “in the wilderness,” and the whole book follows the Israelites through the desert, so a tent among the dunes sets the scene for Numbers; the Sages teach that the Torah was given in the wilderness, a place that belongs to no one, so that it would belong to everyone.
